Belize Expat and Travel ArticlesThe Don Elijio Panti National Park
Belize is one of the sparsely populated countries in the world. It has a population of a little over 300,000 and a land area of nearly 23,000 square kilometers. This amounts to only about 15 people per square kilometer. When you have a country as sparsely populated as this one, it makes for an excellent wandering adventure. The presence of numerous wildlife parks and jungles only make your Belizean tour extra exciting.
Deciding to take a hike in Belize will bring you to a couple of natural wildlife parks scattered all throughout the country. It's interesting because some of the plants and trees in these parks have been used for medicinal purposes by the locals for many, many years. Most popular among these parks dedicated for the study of medicinal plans is the Elijio Panti National Park, which is named after the popular healer Elijio Panti, who was known to incorporate Mayan influences in the practice of alternative medication. Panti has closely worked with leading researchers from all over in order to understand the basis of Mayan alternative medicine. Unknown to the general public is the fact that advances in modern medicine are largely attributed to the continued study of plants that have been determined to have medicinal benefits. The Don Elijio Panti National Park, located in Western Belize, was the farm where Elijio Panti, along with Dr. Rosita Arvigo, an American doctor of naprapathy, worked together for many years. This 35-acre farm is the place where they grew their food, along with the medicinal herbs that Dr. Arvigo learned about. The farm served as an incubator for which Arvigo would be able to preserve the knowledge of the Mayan shamans even when they die. Panti died in 1996. Eventually, the 35-acre farm was grown into a 6,000-acre reserve by the government, establishing the first ever natural reserve for medicinal plants. The trail where Panti would show Dr. Arvigo the medicinal plants was renamed the Panti Medicinal Trail. This has gone on to become one of the most visited attractions in the Cayo district of Belize.
