Belize has a long history of marine conservation. In 1987, Hol Chan Marine Reserve was established to be the first marine park in the country due to the efforts of the people and local government officials to protect the marine wildlife that calls the area its home.

Located close to both Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve covers an area of about 18 square kilometers of coral reefs, mangrove forests, and other marine creatures. Hol Chan is the Mayan translation for “little channel," which refers to the break in the reef where a lot of sea creatures thrive.

The marine reserve into four (4) different zones, each of which plays host to a specific kind of marine organism. Zone A is the most protected zone, as it is located in the outside and the inside of the actual reef. No commercial or sports fishing are allowed here, though snorkeling and diving are allowed.

Meanwhile, Zone B covers the sea grass bed area of the reef. Zone C covers the mangrove forests of the southern portion of Ambergris Caye, while Zone D represents Shark Ray Alley. Each of these zones have their varying strictness when it comes to human activities. Each of these sections are clearly marked by buoys located out in the sea.

The marine reserve was established after fish populations in the area steadily declined. Today, it is wonderful to see that the area is now back to its former glory. Among the sea creatures that you can see here are snappers, groupers, ray sharks, turtles, and dolphins. Certainly, a place in the sea with this much living creatures should be left out alone.

There are only a few rules that you should remember as a visitor to this marine sanctuary. No anchors, no touching of the corals, no fishing, and no throwing away of your garbage. Do not rob you children of the opportunity to appreciate the marine reserve. Follow the rules and be awe-struck by Hol Chan's beauty.
