Belize Expat and Travel ArticlesHow Belizeans Celebrate Christmas
With over 10 ethnic groups, each of which has over 200,000 in population, we can safely say that Belize is a largely multicultural country. Bringing these groups together and making sure that they work in peace and harmony has always been difficult, but there are areas where all of them can agree, with Christmas being the most important one.
With that said, Belizean Christmas has always been a mix of North American and European traditions of midnight feasts and christmas trees on one hand, and the traditional Christmas activities on the other. The Mayans and the Garifuna people have been also able to fuse their own traditions to Christmas. Meanwhile, the Garifuna people have the Charikanari, which is danced to show the relationship between the deer and the hunter. Then during Christmas Eve, the traditional dinner to be served is the typical Belizean dinner of rice, beans, and potatoes, added with some turkey, chicken, and black rum cake in order to highlight the festivities. This may be slightly different from that of the Mayans, who will most likely prepare tamales for Christmas Eve. The diversity of the Belizean people has been the key towards a richer Christmas experience in Belize. Experience it well, and try to experience all. You can talk about...
