Garifuna Music in Belizean Culture

Belize is a country of different cultures, although it is heavily influenced by the cultures of the people of the Caribbean. One of the strongest groups of people that ever affected the national culture of Belize would be the Garifunas, descendants of West African people who now reside in the Central American coasts of Belize, Guatemala, St. Vincent, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

With the Garifunas immigration from Africa to Belize a century ago, much of the music visible with the Garifunas today quite resemble African styles. In particular, this style relies on the call and response patterns of music from Africa, although the Garifuna style is a little less overlapping than its African counterparts.

One evidence of the importance of African influence in Garifuna music is the dominance of the drums as an instrument of choice. The tempo and rhythm of the music highly depend on these percussion instruments, which are often played in a consistent manner all throughout the song. These drums are usually made out of hardwood, whose center has been carved out, while the top most portion is covered with sheep skin to serve as the surface of the drum where the player will drum on.

And similar to African music, song and dance presentations usually accompany the drums. Examples of songs that are played by the Garifuna are the Eremwu Eu, which are sung by women as they make cassava bread, and the Laremuna Wadauman, which are then played by the men whenever they are working in a collective manner.

If you have the time, visiting the coasts of Belize where the Garifuna people thrive is a good experience to have. Learning about their culture and origin is one good way to extend our horizons and learn about the people of the world. Learning about their music is an excellent way to start it off.
