Exploring the Islands Off Belize's Coast

Thank author of this post/comment

Belize's coasts are lined up with natural formations called atolls, which are basically a ring of coral islands surrounding a lagoon. A lot of these atolls in Belize are occupied, and serve as a good launching point for diving expeditions.

Lighthouse Reef is the farthest atoll reef from Belize's coasts. Like the other reefs, Lighthouse Reef is also regularly visited especially by dive boats coming in from San Pedro. Long Caye, meanwhile, is an island that is located on top of Lighthouse Reef.

Apart from divers' centers, Long Caye at Lighthouse Reef hosts an adventure cabin that provide settlement options for the Belize tourist. The caye is located about 60 miles from Belize City, far enough to allow the emergence of settlement areas in the caye area itself, but close enough to the Blue Hole National Monument (about 15 minutes). The Blue Hole is of national importance in Belize as a tourist destination and should not be missed by any visitor.

The Great Blue Hole is basically that large circular hole located smack int he middle of Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Long Caye's presence on top of the Lighthouse Reef is the reason for this proximity. It is a very large hole, measuring about 1000 feet across and 400 feet deep. This great Belizean destination was formed originally as caves that were flooded during the rise of the oceans. Corals may be seen around the rim of the hole, but never down it as the things that you will only observe are stalactites and stalagmites.

Once you are done visiting the Great Blue Hole, there are a lot of nearby cayes where you can spend the day, each of them provides a unique view of Belize's pristine waters. Each caye brings a new adventure, they say!
